The Caught Habits of Language, is an anthology of 100 poems to mark the centenary of the influential Scottish poet W.S. Graham. It includes contributions from leading UK and US poets, and a number of previously unpublished poems by W.S. Graham himself.
This is a very personal book – a real insight into Graham's personal life and previously unseen work, so this needed to be reflected in the design. I was sent hundreds of personal photographs of Graham during his time spent in Cornwall, circa 1960, and soon realised that a selection of what were known as 'The quiff shots' were just too good not to use on the cover. In fact, the images are so good that we decided to remove the title and author names from the front cover entirely, and only show them on the spine. We created a 'soft-back' style cover and dust jacket to make the book feel elegant and contemporary, whilst using Lydian for the titling harked back to Graham's 50s and 60s heydays.
